Explore Your Passion For Becoming A Doctor Or Veterinarian.
Get a head start in pursuing your interest in the field of medicine or veterinary medicine with St. George’s University’s summer program for high school students and college students.
The Med/Vet Summer Leadership Academy at St. George’s University on the beautiful Caribbean island of Grenada offers high school and college students an opportunity to participate in an intensive, 10-day hands-on medicine or veterinary medicine academy, getting a real-world glimpse into what it takes to become not just doctors and veterinarians, but leaders in your chosen profession and in the world.
This experience teaches you in ways no textbook can. The preclinical and preveterinary tracks combine lectures, practical lab work, field trips, and team building events. You’ll even gain hands-on training through simulated and real-life leadership experiences while earning college credit.
Life at the Med/Vet Summer Leadership Academy isn’t all about work. You’ll experience what living in the Caribbean is like with snorkeling, swimming, hiking, and feeling the sand between your toes on Grand Anse Beach, just steps away from your classes. There’s also the surrounding countryside to explore, including the Grand Etang Forest Reserve and beautiful Concord Falls, two attractions that make Grenada so fascinating.
Learn what it takes to be a medical leader at a university that has trained more than 24,000 doctors and veterinarians practicing worldwide. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and a completed application with deposit payment is required to reserve your spot.
The Summer Leadership Academy combines engaging lectures and hands-on, practical experience with fun activities meant to immerse participants in Grenada’s rich culture and beautiful Caribbean environment.

Is there a selection process for choosing the participants?
There are no prerequisites for the Summer Leadership Academy; however, you must be at least 15 years old for the high school session and 18 years old for the college session. The seats in the academy are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Students will be required to listen to lectures, work in labs, and complete medical and veterinary case studies; therefore, we are seeking serious-minded, motivated future doctors and veterinarians to participate.
What is the cost of the Academy?
The cost for the Academy —including all meals, accommodations, lectures, field trips, and transportation in Grenada—is US $2,500 (excluding the optional scuba diving outing). Students are responsible for their own travel arrangements to and from Grenada, although we will provide the name of our travel agent for those who would like assistance.
The Summer Leadership Academy offers open enrollment and seats are limited. Only complete applications submitted with a teacher recommendation and a US $500 deposit will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis. Payments can be made by money order or a check drawn from a bank in the United States. We do not accept credit cards for any portion of tuition payment.
Please make the check or money order payable to:

Attendees are greeted at the airport and transported to campus by a University representative.
If a student wishes to enroll in a scuba class, this can be arranged at the student’s expense. Certified divers will also have the opportunity to go diving. Where is St. George’s University?
St. George’s University is located in Grenada, just north of South America and below the hurricane belt.
What do I need to travel to Grenada?
A valid passport and a letter from the University (which will be provided once we receive your flight details) should be sufficient in most cases to travel to and enter Grenada, but some students may require additional paperwork based on citizenship. We can advise you accordingly.
What do I need to bring to Grenada?
The average temperature in Grenada is 85 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, so pack appropriate dress, including swimwear and bug repellent. We recommend light sweaters and sweatshirts for evenings and for areas that are air conditioned. High SPF sunscreen lotion is a must. Students do not need to bring their own bed linens and bath towels; they will be supplied for you. There are laundry facilities available in the living accommodations. A detailed list will be included in the orientation package.
Will I need to bring my computer or any other electronic devices?
It is not required to bring your laptop or other electronic devices with you, but appropriate use of electronics is permitted. In addition to your laptop and charger, you may choose to bring a phone, tablet, and digital camera. Students will have full access to the computer lab.
There is WiFi in the dorms and throughout campus. All campus buildings have both 110 volt outlets for US style devices, as well as 220 volt outlets. It is recommended to bring a strip outlet with surge protection if you anticipate charging any valuable devices. For off-campus, you’ll need a transformer to convert power from 220 volt to 110 volt for charging your US devices.
Where will I be living while in the Med/Vet Summer Leadership Academy?
The students will be housed in one of our beautiful dorms overlooking the Caribbean Sea on the True Blue campus. The accommodations have common kitchen and bath facilities, and are within walking distance of all the campus facilities.
What if there is room damage?
All dorm rooms will be inspected at the beginning and end of each program. If there is any damage, accounts will be charged accordingly.
What are the Summer Academy safety requirements?
For safety reasons, closed-toed shoes are required in all labs. While you may want to wear sandals all the time, they will not be allowed in the labs. Sneakers are permitted.
If you have facial piercings, such as lip, eyebrow, nose, cheek, or stretched earlobes, you will have to remove them for some of the Summer Academy activities such as visits to the local hospital, interactions with live animals, and practice clinical work with professional personnel.
Is there security on campus?
In order to provide a safe and secure environment, St. George’s University staffs and maintains a professional Department of Public Safety (DPS). Security officers patrol University grounds 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, and 365 days per year. They are qualified to handle any type of safety and security situation.
Do I need medical insurance?
All students studying in Grenada are required to carry personal medical insurance. Students are required to bring their medical insurance card and contact information with them to Grenada. Check with your provider to be sure that your coverage will be in effect while in Grenada. It is recommended that students purchase supplemental travel insurance, which includes air evacuation in the event of an emergency.
How can I contact family or friends while in Grenada?
Before arriving in Grenada, families will receive general contact and urgent contact information. Most students use their cell phone on WiFi while on campus. Through apps like Facebook messenger and WhatsApp, you can make calls and send texts.
Will I receive academic credit?
In addition to a certificate of completion, qualifying students will receive college credit through SGU’s School of Arts and Sciences by participating in lectures and clinical practicum.
Is there a language requirement?
All teaching at St George’s University is delivered in English, therefore, you must be proficient in reading, writing, speaking and listening in English to excel in the Summer Academy.
