Medical school is a significant investment in your future. SGU offers a variety of scholarship opportunities that can help you achieve your dream of becoming a doctor. Each SGU award is specifically tailored to recognize and reward exceptional qualities in aspiring medical professionals. From academic merit scholarships to scholarships that recognize community service, achievements in research, a desire to work with populations that are traditionally underserved in medicine, and service in the healthcare sector, SGU is committed to fostering a diverse and talented community of future doctors.

Scholarship Consideration

All students admitted to the Four-Year Doctor of Medicine (MD) or to one of the Seven-Year, Six-Year or Five-Year Medical Degree Tracks are automatically reviewed for academic and other scholarship type eligibility at the time of acceptance. Please see below for additional information.

Scholarship Eligibility and Timing of Awards

4-Year Doctor of Medicine Program

Students accepted to the Four-Year MD program will be reviewed for scholarships at the time of acceptance. Scholarships are applied across the MD program (10 Terms).

Pre-Clinical Programs

Students accepted to one of our Seven-year, Six-year or Five-year Medical Degree Tracks (preclinical) will be reviewed at the time of acceptance into the pathway. Please note: There are no scholarships available for the preclinical portion of the program. All scholarships that are awarded will be distributed beginning with Term 1 of the MD program and are applied across the MD program (10 Terms).

Provisionally Accepted Students

If you have received a provisional acceptance, you may still be eligible for scholarship consideration. Please contact your admissions representative for additional details.

International (Non- US and Non- Canadian)

All International (non-US and non-Canadian) students are eligible to be reviewed for scholarships and need-based bursaries. International Students will need to submit a Confidential Financial Statement (CFS) to be considered for an award. Contact your admissions representative for additional details and if you have any questions while completing the CFS.

Academic Merit Scholarships

Academic Merit Scholarships celebrate academic achievement and academic potential. These awards recognize applicants for their academic accomplishments as demonstrated through overall and science grade point averages and standardized testing performance.

The Chancellor’s Legacy of Excellence Award

The Chancellor’s Legacy of Excellence Scholarship celebrates and honors students who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement. This prestigious scholarship of $120,000 is for individuals who have attained a minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 3.70, a science GPA of 3.50, and an MCAT score of 506.

The SGU Medical Scholar Award

The SGU Medical Scholar Award acknowledges and celebrates students who have demonstrated notable academic achievement and embody the essential qualities that contribute to becoming successful physicians. This award recognizes individuals with a strong commitment to their medical studies and a proven track record of academic excellence.

Difference-Maker Scholarship

Celebrating outstanding individuals dedicated to making a positive impact in the lives of others through their volunteerism, careers, service initiatives, or innovative research.

Eligibility

All students admitted to the Four-Year Doctor of Medicine (MD) or to one of the Seven-Year, Six-Year or Five-Year Medical Degree Tracks (pre-clinical) are automatically reviewed for a Difference-Maker Scholarship. The committee considers humanitarian work, research, service and volunteer initiatives, careers within the military, and health professions.

Humanitarian Work

Recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to humanitarian causes, making a positive impact on the lives of others through their volunteerism, community service, and outreach efforts. Applicants must have a proven track record of selfless dedication to improving the well-being of communities and individuals in need.

Active Military and Veteran Service

The Active Military and Veteran Scholarship honors individuals who have served or are currently serving in the United States military, recognizing the unique skills, resilience, and dedication of active military and veterans.

Achievements in Research

We celebrate individuals who have demonstrated outstanding innovation and dedication in the field of research. We will consider students involved in groundbreaking projects, scientific discoveries, or innovative solutions that contribute positively to society. Applicants must showcase a passion for inquiry, a commitment to advancing knowledge, and a potential to make a lasting impact through their research initiatives.

Experience as A Healthcare Worker

We celebrate and acknowledge individuals who have experience working in direct patient care, healthcare administration, or allied health professions. SGU is proud to recognize the vital contributions of healthcare workers who demonstrate exceptional dedication to promoting wellness, providing compassionate care, and improving overall healthcare outcomes.

Connections And Community Scholarship

The Connections and Community Scholarship recognize the rich tapestry of connections within the SGU community, fostering excellence through siblings’ bonds, legacy achievements, mentorship experiences, institutional partnerships, and community collaborations.

Eligibility

All students admitted to the Doctor of Medicine program or Seven-year, Six-year or Five-Year Medical Degree Tracks (preclinical) will be automatically reviewed for a Connections and Community Scholarship.

Legacy Achievement

SGU is dedicated to honoring the academic and professional legacy within families associated with SGU. Eligible candidates are students who have a parent, grandparent, sibling or close relative who currently attends or is an alumnus of SGU Medical School and recognizes the continued commitment of families to the SGU community.

School Spirit, Affiliate, and Institutional Partnership Scholarships

Strengthening ties with partnering institutions is integral to SGU’s success. We are pleased to recognize students who have graduated from institutions that have an established affiliation with SGU. By fostering relationships with these partner institutions, SGU aims to support students who contribute to the diversity and collaborative spirit within the medical school.

The CARE Scholarship

This scholarship is possible through a collaboration between St. George’s University and three esteemed affiliated hospitals in New Jersey—Hackensack, St. Joseph’s, and Jersey Shore. Frequently Asked Questions

Who reviews students for scholarships at SGU?

Members of the Scholarship Committee holistically review every aspect of a student’s file to determine eligibility for all awards we offer.

What type of information is considered when reviewing scholarships?

The Scholarship Committee reviews your academics, extracurricular activities, as well as any research and volunteer work. While not required as part of your admission application, you can upload a resume or CV as part of your application.

I have already been granted scholarship and have since resat the MCAT exam. Can my new higher score be considered?

Yes! If you have an enhancement to your application after your scholarship has been granted, contact your admissions representative who will assist you through the process.

Can I receive more than one Scholarship?

Yes, we will consider you for more than one scholarship.

Is there a separate application that needs to be completed to be considered for scholarships?

For most scholarships, students will be reviewed automatically upon admission to SGU without a separate application. However, to be considered for a Mission-To-Serve scholarship, you will need to complete a separate application. Mission-To-Serve scholarships include: City Doctors, CARE, and the Equity in Medicine award.

I am an international student- do I qualify for scholarships?

Yes! International students are reviewed for all eligible scholarships at the time of admission. You must complete a Confidential Financial Statement to be considered for any needs based awards.

I am a Canadian Student- do I qualify for scholarships?

Yes! Canadian students are reviewed for all eligible scholarships at the time of admission.

I was provisionally accepted to SGU. Do I qualify for scholarships?

Can I be reviewed for a scholarship after I am already enrolled at SGU?

No. Scholarships are only awarded at the time of acceptance. However all scholarships are applied over the full ten terms of your program.
