Doctor of Medicine (MD) Program
The Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at St. George’s University (SGU), a Caribbean medical school in Grenada, opens doors for a medical career on an international scale.
The MD program and tracks at SGU is accredited by the Grenada Medical and Dental Council (GMDC) which is recognized by the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME) and the U.S. National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA). The program and tracks are also approved by many external regulatory and accrediting bodies, including:

MD Program Curriculum and Format
SGU’s MD program and tracks have multiple entry points.
We offer a traditional Four-year MD program for students entering with a bachelor’s degree
- The preclinical Five-year, Six-year and Seven-year MD tracks include coursework designed to prepare our students for the MD Program.
- Students at SGU can complete clinical and ambulatory training in over 75 leading hospitals and health systems in the US and the UK.
- Clinical studies include core rotations, sub-internships, primary care, and elective rotations.
Four-Year MD Program
The first two years of the Four-Year MD Program concentrate on the traditional basic science disciplines at SGU’s campus in Grenada.
- Laboratory experience is integral to these first two years, along with small group discussions designed for problem-based learning and early integration of clinical medicine into basic sciences at the General Hospital in Grenada.
- Students may also consider completing one year of preclinical sciences and/or the first year of basic sciences in the United Kingdom as part of the St. George’s University of Grenada School of Medicine/Northumbria University Four-Year MD Program.
The final two years focus on clinical sciences, with training at SGU’s clinical centers and affiliated hospitals in the US, UK, and Grenada.
- Clinical training emphasizes responsibility, maturity, and compassion in the development of professional excellence.
- Students learn how to conduct themselves as physicians, take responsibility, work harmoniously with professional colleagues, and exhibit maturity.
Doctor of Medicine Program: Pathway to Residency Match
Students enrolled in our Four-Year MD program spend two years studying the basic sciences, followed by access to clinical training opportunities at over 75 affiliated hospitals and clinical centers in the US, UK, and Grenada.
Entry points are available for students from any education system around the world—including a four-year program for those entering with a traditional baccalaureate degree, and five-, six-, and seven-year MD tracks.

There are a range of entry points into our MD program and tracks, accommodating applicants of all educational systems and academic backgrounds.
Preclinical Tracks
Preclinical Year 1 - 7 Year MD Track
The Seven–Year MD track is designed for students with secondary school credentials and need to study a complete course in the foundation sciences necessary to succeed in the MD program. With a focus on preclinical sciences, social sciences, and humanities, the seven-year entry point offers this necessary foundation.
Entry Qualifications*
- Secondary School Diploma: A strong performance in sciences.
- General Education Diploma (GED): Minimum score of 175 in math, science, social studies, and humanities.
- IGCSE: Minimum grade B in 6 or more subjects, including biology, chemistry, math, physics, and English.
- American High School Diploma
- Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education
Preclinical Year 2 - 6 Year MD Track
Entry into the Six-Year MD track is designed for students with the further education examination qualifications and provides foundation sciences necessary for mastering the basic and clinical sciences phases of the track later in the MD curriculum.
Entry Qualifications*
- American High School Diploma: AP grades are not required; however, Admissions may evaluate students who completed the test and received 4 or 5 in biology and/or chemistry or 95% or higher overall averages.
- BTEC: Diploma in the appropriate sciences with overall distinctions.
- Secondary School Diploma: Strong science performance in biology and chemistry.
- GCE AS Levels: Minimum 3 subjects with minimum grade B in biology, chemistry, and math or physics.

Preclinical Year 3 - 5 Year MD Track
The Five-Year MD track is designed for students with Advanced Level or International Baccalaureate credentials. Students build on an academic background in science with challenging medical education coursework in anatomy, physiology, and other foundational sciences necessary for success in the basic sciences and clinical sciences phases of the MD degree program in SGU’s medical school.
Entry Qualifications*
- Approved Foundation Programs: SGU recognizes and approves various science/medical pathway programs. The Admissions Committee assesses each program individually.
- GCE A Levels: A minimum of 3 subjects with grades A or B in biology, chemistry, and either math or physics. If neither math nor physics was taken at A Levels, a strong third non-science subject may be accepted, provided there is proof that math or physics was taken at AS Level.
- CAPE Units 1 and 2: Minimum of Grade 2 in Units I & II, including chemistry, biology, and one other subject – preferably math or physics.
- Full IB Diploma: Minimum score of 32 points: 3 HL science subjects and 2 HL subjects, including minimum grade 5 in biology and chemistry.
- Associate degree: with a strong biological science background.
- All 10+ 2 India Senior Secondary School Certificate: Minimum average of 80% average in biology, chemistry, math, physics, and English. *A pre-sessional math program may be necessary if math has not been taken or successfully completed before matriculation.

Four-Year MD Program
Year 1 and 2 (Basic Sciences)
Students complete their courses at SGU’s Campus in Grenada. Students learn through traditional lectures and laboratory sessions augmented by small–group sessions and case–based learning exercises.
Year 3 and Year 4 (Clinical Training)
Students complete their final two years at SGU-affiliated hospitals and clinics across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Grenada using bedside learning augmented by lectures, small groups, and directed study.
One MD Degree Program, Three Locations
SGU is truly an international institution, not only with its diverse student body and faculty but the unique opportunity for students to begin their medical education in Grenada or the United Kingdom. The two paths feature the same curriculum and provide a strong foundation for SGU’s future physicians. Students have the option of doing clinical rotations either in the US or the UK in the last two years.

For MD applicants from Canada, there are scholarship opportunities. The Canada Scholarship offers partial tuition awards to Canadian citizens/permanent residents who exhibit academic excellence, demonstrate financial need, and are dedicated to the enhancement of medical care systems. These awards are grants-in-aid and do not have to be repaid.
